Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova - US Open Tennis 2011

US Open Maria SharapovaMaria Sharapova is one of the top players in the world having won three Grand Slam tournaments but is on the comeback from a long lay-off through injury. Maria spent over 6 months out of the game into the middle of 2009 and is slowly working her way back up the rankings with some good showings. Sharapova is the ultra competitor who never knows when she is beaten so is always worth a punt.

Sharapova has continued to improve in 2010 and back on the hard courts in recent weeks she looks to be getting better and better, the bookmakers believe so and she is being well backed for a big tournament at Flushing Meadow.

Sharapova did not appear in a Grand slam until the French Open last year where she reached the Quarter-Final in a surprise performance after such a long lay-off. She showed all her grit to reach that round and showed she had not lost any of her famous determination. Wimbledon was slightly disappointing as she was knocked out in the 2nd Round to a relative unknown but she will one player who the top seeds will want to avoid at Flushing Meadow.

She has perhaps not got back to where she was so far but it is coming slowly but surely, with Serena Williams missing from the line up Sharapova must really fancy her chances of claiming her second US Open title.

Since her emergence she has proven time and time again that she is a force to be reckoned with on grass and hard courts. She has little to prove as far as the US Open is concerned, having won here in 2006 beating Justine Henin in the final and she will be desperate to make it number two.
