Andy Murray

US Open Andy Murray21 year old Andy Murray is the highest ranked British Player in the World. He is currently ranked 6th, which is a career high and comes to the Tournament after his best ATP win when taking the Cincinatti Masters last month. In taking that title he overcame Novak Djokovioc in the final who he had already beaten in the Toronto Masters the week before. He has won six titles on the ATP circuit and has been a runner-up on a further four occasions. Two of those wins came this year, firstly at the Qatar Open, where he defeated World Number 4, Nikolay Davidenko, in the semi final before going on to win the final against the up and coming Polish player, Stanislas Wawrinka. Then he won again at the Marseille ATP Open, where he beat Croation, Mario Ancic, in the final.

He had a disappointing Australian Open. He was seeded 9th and felt he was in good form, but he lost his opening round match to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who went on to finish runner up. Tsonga, since then has come on leaps and bounds and is ranked 15th in the world.

In fact Murray’s Grand Slam performances have been poor overall. His best run was to the quarter final at Wimbledon this year, but he was knocked out in closely fought match by eventual Champion Rafael Nadal. He made Round three at the US Open Betting last year.

Murray has an all court game but is more comfortable at the baseline. He has strong forehands and backhands and his net play is up there with the best in the world. His serve is accurate but not deadly quick.

Murray unfortunately has earned a reputation of petulance on the circuit and is not one of the most popular players. He has received plenty of criticism from the media, public and even other players for his behaviour. He has said however that he is working hard to restore his image and hopes that the knock on effect will be improved tennis. There are already signs that Murray has improved out of all recognition these last few months. He is playing superbly well and he will have a big chance to go all the way at this tournament.
